#SOL18 Day 12: Pom Poms

A lot of the students at my school can’t get enough of making pom poms. All it took was our media specialist purchasing a few pom pom makers and (lots!) of yarn. They really are pretty simple to make: wrap yarn around the form many, many, many times, tie (tightly!) around all of the loops, and then cut the ends of the loops. To improve the appearance of the pom pom, trim the ends so they are even. That’s it!

I’m always amazed at how often a new gadget is created and sold to try to make a simple task even easier. My daughter was convinced that she couldn’t make pom poms without this plastic maker. “You know, when I was a kid, I made tons of pom poms by wrapping yarn around cardboard,” I shared with her. She was skeptical, but once I showed her a picture of a cardboard rectangle with a notch cut in the middle, and she went up to her room to try it out. An hour later, I went up to check on her and found pom poms dangling from each of the blades on her ceiling fan.

Making pom poms might be my form of stress therapy this week. Maybe I can talk my daughter into working together on a pom pom wreath in bright, cheerful spring colors.
